and               Saint-Gobain               Abrasives               Inc.

because               of               his               exposure               to               asbestos               while               working               as               a               machinist.

The               72-year-old               has               been               diagnosed               with               mesothelioma,               and               doctors               believe               it               is               related               to               his               work.

Although               this               type               of               litigation               is               common,               mesothelioma               lawsuits               vary               greatly.

               Asbestos               has               been               a               known               health               issue               since               1898               after               the               first               reports               found               lung               problems               in               miners               who               worked               with               the               material.

The               first               lawsuits               date               back               to               the               1920s,               but               people               continue               to               be               exposed               to               the               material.

It               is               estimated               that               more               than               22               million               people               in               the               U.S.

may               have               been               in               contact               with               the               carcinogen.

Many               asbestos               products               were               banned               in               1989               in               the               U.S.,               and               the               EPA               set               guidelines               for               their               use.

However,               in               1991,               the               ban               was               overturned               by               a               court               ruling,               so               there               are               still               products               with               asbestos               on               the               market.
