Lung               cancer               affects               one               out               of               every               14               people               in               the               United               States               according               to               statistics               from               the               US               National               Cancer               Institute.

There               are               two               basic               types               (and               a               combination               of               the               two               types)               of               lung               cancer;               non               small               cell               lung               cancer               and               small               cell               lung               cancer.

Their               rate               of               growth               and               where               they               start               in               the               lungs               are               vastly               different.

However,               both               are               caused               by               the               same               things.

Second               Hand               Smoke               and               Smoking
90%               of               all               lung               cancer               cases               are               caused               by               smoking.

Smoking               tobacco               has               over               4,000               chemicals               that               will               increase               the               risk               for               developing               cancer               cells               in               the               lung,               25               times               more               likely               than               the               average               nonsmoker.

Passive,               or               second               hand,               smoking               can               also               increase               the               likelihood               of               lung               cancer.

There               are               3,000               or               so               deaths               from               lung               cancer               from               those               that               are               second               hand               smokers               (those               living               with               a               smoker               have               a               24%               increase               in               lung               cancer               than               those               that               reside               with               a               nonsmoker).
               Radon               and               Asbestos
12%               of               all               lung               cancer               deaths               are               from               radon               (a               natural               gas               that               is               the               decay               of               uranium).

While               the               gas               is               invisible               and               odorless,               there               are               now               simple               test               kits               that               can               be               purchased               to               show               the               levels               of               radon               in               your               home.
Asbestos               are               silicate               fibers               that               can               be               in               many               workplaces.

It               was               used               in               insulation               and               is               not               limited               or               completely               banned.

According               to               the               cancer               statistics,               workers               around               asbestos               that               do               not               smoke               have               a               five               time               risk               of               lung               cancer               while               workers               that               do               smoke               that               are               around               asbestos               have               a               50-90               time               risk               of               lung               cancer.
               History               and               Hereditary               Issues
There               is               an               increased               risk               of               getting               lung               cancer               is               you               have               a               family               predisposition               to               the               disease.

These               risk               factors               are               beyond               our               control               but               are               still               very               real.
               Pollution
Bad               air               quality               is               another               risk               factor               and               cause               of               lung               cancer.

1%               of               the               deaths               from               cancer               are               from               breathing               overly               polluted               air.

Always               check               the               air               quality               before               you               start               to               do               outdoor               activities               and               when               doing               some               activities               perhaps               a               mask               should               be               worn               if               you               have               other               risk               factors               for               the               causes               of               lung               cancer.
