Ilona Warf's blog ::Asbestosis - Pulmonary Asbestosis Disease

For               those               that               are               around               asbestos,               like               miners,               there               has               always               been               a               higher               risk               of               lung               cancer.

Especially               a               certain               type               of               lung               cancer               called               mesothelioma.

However,               there               is               another               lung               abnormality               that               asbestos               workers               get               as               well,               which               is               called               asbestosis.

Asbestosis               is               the               inflammation               of               the               parenchymal               tissue               of               the               lungs.

It               will               give               the               worker               shortness               of               breath               and               a               higher               chance               of               lung               cancer.

When               someone               inhales               asbestos               it               will               scar               the               lung               tissue,               this               scarring               causes               the               inflammation               in               the               lung               that               is               asbestosis.

The               asbestos               fibers               will               activate               the               body's               own               natural               immune               system               to               attack,               and               this               causes               inflammation               in               the               lung               cavities.

It               is               a               slow               and               chronic               condition.

It               contributes               to               scar               tissue,               which               will               build               up               and               restrict               the               lungs               from               doing               their               job.

It               reduces               the               oxygen               flow               and               inhibits               carbon               dioxide               removal.

This               is               where               oxygen               therapy               can               help               with               the               breathing               difficulties               and               the               shortness               of               breath.
               Asbestosis               Symptoms
There               are               not               many               signs               to               having               asbestosis               other               than               shortness               of               breath.

After               a               prolonged               and               advanced               case               of               asbestosis               there               may               be               coughing               and               respiratory               failure.

Like               mesothelioma,               asbestosis               can               take               a               decade               or               so               after               first               exposure               to               the               asbestos.

There               can               be               a               very               long               dormant               period               from               exposure               to               symptoms,               however               whenever               there               is               breathing               and               respiratory               problems               in               anyone               who               has               ever               had               exposure               to               asbestos               should               be               considered               viable               hosts               for               asbestosis               or               mesothelioma.
               Asbestosis               Treatment
Currently               there               is               not               much               treatment               that               is               widely               available               for               asbestosis.

Some               things               that               may               help               are               oxygen               therapy.

Oxygen               therapy               can               help               with               the               breathing               difficulties               and               increase               the               concentration               of               oxygen               in               the               body.
Other               items               include               postural               drainage               of               the               lungs               to               take               out               any               liquid               secretions               and               increase               lung               capacity               and               breathing.

Some               form               of               nebulizers,               like               those               used               in               COPD               and               asthma               sufferers,               can               also               be               prescribed               so               that               the               secretions               in               the               lungs               can               be               diluted               and               patients               may               be               able               to               breathe               better               from               this               as               well.
Because               of               so               many               asbestos               related               conditions               such               as               asbestosis               and               mesothelioma,               legal               cases               have               been               being               fought               in               our               courts               since               1929.

Liability               for               asbestos               and               working               near               asbestos               is               a               serious               business,               in               both               the               cost               to               companies               that               try               to               skirt               the               system               and               by               the               healthcare               costs               to               their               employees.

Asbestos               specialty               lawyers               command               top               dollar               due               to               the               payouts               in               those               types               of               cases.

There               are               many               amazing               things               about               the               body               that               most               people               don't               know.

Take,               for               instance,               the               fact               that               there               are               more               bacteria               in               our               bodies               than               there               are               human               cells.

Most               people               think               of               the               heart               as               just               a               muscle               that               pumps               blood,               but               in               reality,               it               also               produces               hormones               like               a               gland               as               well.

Most               also               think               that               the               tonsils               and               the               appendix               are               useless.

But               they               both               serve               a               function.

The               appendix               played               a               huge               role               back               in               prehistoric               times               when               it               was               essentially               a               filter               that               took               poisons               out               of               the               digestive               tract.

The               tonsils               play               a               role               in               the               immune               system.

They               are               like               the               appendix               was               by               removing               infection               out               of               the               bloodstream.
Until               not               too               long               ago,               most               people               did               not               know               that               good               oral               health               had               something               to               do               with               your               heart               being               healthy.

Inflammation               in               your               mouth               can               cause               inflammation               in               your               arteries               and               that               can               scar               them               and               cause               plaques               to               form.

These               can               lead               to               a               heart               attack.
Now               we               learn               that               the               lungs               have               taste               receptors.

    That's               right,               taste               receptors.

I've               always               known               that               smell               plays               an               important               role               in               taste,               but               the               lungs?

    No               way.
                   According               to               the               St.

Louis               Post               Dispatch:               "The               ability               to               taste               isn't               limited               to               the               mouth,               and               researchers               say               that               discovery               might               one               day               lead               to               better               treatments               for               diseases               such               as               asthma.

It               turns               out               that               receptors               for               bitter               tastes               are               also               found               in               the               smooth               muscles               of               the               lungs               and               airways"

Maybe               that's               why               an               extremely               bitter               substance               like               Wormwood,               which               is               used               to               make               the               alcoholic               drink               Absinthe,               can               have               an               immediate               cloying               effect               on               the               lungs.
Originally,               it               was               thought               that               the               hereditary               reason               for               having               taste               receptors               in               the               lungs               may               be               because               many               plants               and               animals               that               are               poisonous               produce               a               bitter               taste               when               you               encounter               them               or               taste               them.

That               taste               may               produce               a               "flight               or               fight"               response               in               humans.
But               after               further               research,               this               turned               out               to               be               a               false               assumption.

Instead               the               bitter               tastes               caused               the               muscles               in               the               lungs               to               relax.

The               bitter               tastes               actually               opened               up               the               airways               much               better               than               any               other               drug               that               is               currently               on               the               market               to               treat               asthma.
Bitter               taste               is               the               only               taste               that               the               lung               receptors               can               detect.

They               cannot               detect               salty,               sweet,               or               sour               tastes               like               the               tongue.

And               also               unlike               the               tongue,               the               lungs               do               not               send               signals               to               the               brain,               they               just               react               to               the               bitter               taste               by               relaxing.

Ilona Warf's blog ::Asbestosis - The Other Lung Health Problem Caused by Asbestos

It's               not               exactly               known               how               exposure               to               asbestos               causes               mesothelioma.

There               are               different               theories               to               explain               the               mechanism               by               which               asbestos               fibers               change               healthy               mesothelial               cells               into               malignant               cells.

One               theory               suggests               that               the               cells               react               directly               to               the               presence               of               asbestos               on               the               mesothelial               cells.

Another               theory               suggests               that               the               asbestos               fibers               cause               changes               in               the               mesothelium               indirectly.

Some,               in               the               medical               profession               believe               that               the               asbestos               fibers               react               with               the               cells               and               a               toxin               is               released               into               the               cells               which               cause               the               cells               to               change               into               cancer               cells.

Asbestos               fibers               are               soft               and               pliable.

They               have               little               hook-like               ends               that               embed               into               the               mesothelium.

Once               asbestos               fibers               are               inhaled,               the               fibers               are               in               your               respiratory               tract               to               stay.

When               the               fibers               get               stuck               in               the               cells,               they               create               an               inflammatory               process               which               causes               chemicals               known               as               cytokines.

These               chemicals               cause               changes               within               the               mesothelial               cells.

Healthy               cells               begin               to               turn               into               cancer               cells.

Just               how               this               process               occurs               isn't               completely               understood.

It               is               believed               that               these               cytokines               interfere               with               the               balance               between               the               genes               that               promote               growth               and               the               genes               that               suppress               growth               of               the               cells.

It               is               believed               that               the               rate               of               cell               growth               and               cell               division               gets               out               of               harmony.
                   Genetic               influence               on               mesothelioma
It               is               believed               that               it               only               takes               one               cell               to               change               into               a               cancer               cell.

The               genetic               material               necessary               to               change               a               normal               mesothelial               cell               into               a               cancer               cell               is               likely               to               occur               in               just               a               single               cell.

Once               the               cancer               cell               starts               to               divide,               it               replicates               more               cancer               cells.

With               each               cell's               division               the               genetic               information               is               replicated               so               that               the               cells               grow               out               of               control.

People               who               suffer               from               mesothelioma               often               have               abnormalities               in               the               chromosomes.

As               the               cells               divide               the               abnormal               sequences               of               the               chromosomes               continue               to               be               replicated.
It               is               also               believed               that               a               specific               virus,               the               simian               virus               40               (SV40               virus)               reacts               with               the               asbestos               fibers               to               cause               changes               within               the               cells.

This               virus               may               have               been               contracted               through               a               vaccination               that               was               contaminated               with               the               virus.

During               the               1950s               and               1960s               some               vaccinations               were               contaminated               with               the               virus.

It               is               believed               that               mesothelioma               could               have               been               indirectly               caused               by               changes               in               the               DNA               through               a               reaction               between               the               asbestos               and               the               virus.
                   Conclusion
Exposure               to               asbestos               not               only               puts               you               at               risk               for               mesothelioma               of               the               respiratory               tract               it               can               also               enter               into               the               gastrointestinal               tract.

Asbestos               can               cause               other               diseases               such               as               lung               cancer,               asbestosis,               emphysema,               and               gastric               cancer.

Because               asbestos               is               highly               toxic,               anyone               living               or               working               in               an               environment               where               there               is               asbestos,               the               mineral               should               either               be               covered               or               encapsulated               or               removed.

It               could               be               much               more               expensive               and               dangerous               to               remove               asbestos               from               a               building.

Only               licensed               personnel               who               are               trained               in               the               field               should               take               measures               to               remove               asbestos               from               a               home               or               building.
