Ilona Warf's blog ::Most common cancers in American women and men

What               is               the               single               most               common               cancer               in               the               entire               world?

It's               also               by               far               the               most               common               skin               cancer               in               the               United               States.

It               is               basal               cell               carcinoma,               a               type               of               skin               cancer.

According               to               the               American               Cancer               Society,               800,000               to               900,000               new               cases               are               diagnosed               every               year               in               America.

Because               basal               cell               carcinoma               is               slow               growing,               it's               reasonable               to               assume               that               many               cases               go               undiagnosed               because               the               person               who               has               this               most               common               form               of               cancer               can               easily               die               from               a               car               accident,               heart               disease               or               diabetes,               while               all               along,               this               cancer               had               been               slowly               growing               on               some               sun-exposed               area               of               their               body,               unknown               to               the               patient,               or               maybe               known               but               not               minded,               brushed               off               as               perhaps               a               sign               of               aging               skin.
A               new               study               links               the               processes               that               are               involved               in               the               healing               of               wounds,               to               a               higher               risk               of               basal               cell               carcinoma.

The               study               comes               from               the               Swedish               medical               university               Karolinska               Institutet,               and               the               report               is               in               the               Proceedings               of               the               National               Academy               of               Sciences               (2011).
Mice               were               used               in               the               study.

The               number               as               well               as               size               of               basal               cell               carcinoma               tumors               can               be               increased               via               an               active               wound               healing               process.

Of               course,               basal               cell               carcinoma               is               the               most               common               cancer               in               the               world               simply               because               so               many               people               spend               a               lot               of               time               outdoors;               basal               cell               carcinoma               is               very               strongly               correlated               with               sun               exposure:               about               90               percent               of               cases.
The               wound               healing               process               encourages               cell               proliferation               (multiplication),               and               this               may               explain               the               increase               in               tumor               size               of               this               skin               cancer.

Increase               in               tumor               number               is               explained               by               heightened               recruitment               of               cells               that               have               the               potential               to               initiate               formation               of               tumors.
"We               believe               that               exposure               to               UV               radiation               from               the               sun               together               with               an               active               tissue               regeneration               process               is               a               dangerous               combination               increasing               the               risk               of               developing               basal               cell               carcinoma,"               states               Rune               Toftgård,               Professor               at               Karolinska               Institutet,               and               principal               study               author.
Severe               sunburn               is               associated               with               risk               of               the               deadliest               skin               cancer,               melanoma.

But               Toftgård               says               that               severe               sunburn               is               a               notable               risk               factor               for               basal               cell               carcinoma               as               well.

Does               this               mean               that               if               you               cut               yourself,               you've               just               bumped               up               your               risk               of               basal               cell               carcinoma?

Of               course               not.

Especially               since               not               all               kinds               of               wounds               are               sufficient               for               increasing               formation               of               tumors.
The               tumor               enhancing               effect               comes               from               damage               to               deeper               portions               of               the               skin.

This               area               of               research               is               relatively               new,               but               these               findings               certainly               can't               be               ignored.
"One               may               assume               that               the               combination               of               tissue               damage               from               severe               sunburn,               and               DNA               damage               or               mutations               caused               by               UV               radiation               has               a               similar               effect,"               adds               Rune               Toftgård.
In               addition               to               excessive               sun               exposure,               risk               factors               for               the               most               common               cancer               in               the               world,               basal               cell               carcinoma,               include               exposure               to               X-rays,               coal               and               industrial               tars;               fair               skin;               blonde               or               red               hair;               green               or               blue               eyes;               and               being               male.
